Getting lost in Krakow, Early Morning

Updated: Dec 24, 2018

We had a coach and train to take at 10.30 am. The previous day, we had been out practically the whole day on our Auschwitz tour. And no way, was I going to leave Krakow without having more experiences. I looked out of the window of our beautiful Apartment homestay.

When we were in the Uprising Museum in Warsaw, we had met this Polish girl, who belonged to Krakow and she had insisted that we listen to the bugle which plays every hour in St Marys Basilica in the Old Town and to attend an orchestra, if we had the opportunity. The orchestra of 125 to 200 participants, apparently is something totally memorable. So orchestra may not be possible, but the Bugle, I would definitely catch, I had vowed.

I packed my stuff the night before, so that I could go out and come back well in time for breakfast. There were some four others who were also interested. We set out following our GPS into Old Town.

And just as the clock struck the seventh hour, we heard the Bugle play. We couldn't enter because it was mass time and the church is thrown open to tourists after 11 am approximately, on weekdays. By the time we could figure out from which window, the bugler was, it started playing from the second window . Like a puppy chasing his own tail, we were running here and there, to find out from which window it was playing. It plays four times for the four cardinal directions. Read more about it here.

After listening to the Bugle. we decided to see the famous Royal Castle of Krakow. We reached the walls, but again time of entry was 10 am, so we couldn't enter.

But our group split up here, as some of them wanted to stroll in the gardens. Now, I was alone with another. And by the time we turned and made off, I realized, my GPS wasn't working. And that we were a little lost..

We bravely carried on. We didn't realize it then. We were going round in circles. We heard the Bugle another two times. But we were half oblivious to all this. Just walking down the cobbled streets with the suns rays playing hide and seek around street corners......

...and on steeple tops, watching the waste being towed away scientifically on trucks, the roads being washed clean.....

....people getting out in their bicycles to do their morning chores and exercise...

....peeping into enchanting shop windows...weren't something I would have missed for all the world.

When we reached our Apartments, just in time, we realized our apartment was on the rear of the Royal Palace... :), :)
