Selfie time in Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Updated: Dec 12, 2018

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide

Bolivia is a once in a lifetime experience –from luxury at its best in one of the resorts on the shores of Lake Titicaca to the arid salt flats at Salar de Uyuni- Bolivia has a diverse culture and landscape.

Experience the largest salt flats on Earth and stay at one of the salt hotels where everything is made of salt! Salar de Uyuni is a photographer’s delight for experimenting with amazing mirror effects.

Country: Bolivia

Visa Policy:

Bolivia offers visa free travel to nationals of 51 countries – EU, Canada, Mexico and most South American nations. US citizens need to show hotel reservations and proof of funds to obtain visa on arrival for a fee. Chinese nationals can obtain a visa on arrival for a fee or a visa for a fee prior to travelling. Indian citizens can avail of visa on arrival for a fee or they can get a visa for free prior to travelling.

Best time to visit:

Between July and October for great weather. Visit in March, April to see the wet flats.

Nearest town: Uyuni

Reaching the Salar:

Salar de Uyuni is in Bolivia. The nearest international airport is in La paz, the capital of Bolivia. There are direct flights to La paz from Bogota, Lima, Cusco and some other South American cities.

By air: The nearest airport is at Uyuni with Airline Amazonas and Boliviano de Aviacion flying between La Paz and Uyuni. If you are short on time then it is better to fly to Uyuni but flight delays and cancellations are not uncommon.

By train: This is the more scenic route and with limited time we thought this would be the best. From La paz there is no train so you have to travel by bus from La paz to Oruro (approx. 3 hrs). Then take the train from Oruro to Uyuni (7 hrs). Plan according to the train schedule as follows:

Tuesdays and Fridays: 14:30 departure from Oruro.

Wednesdays and Saturdays: 19:00 departure from Oruro.

Since the train does not run daily, it is advisable to book in advance. Bookings can be done online.

Look out for lagoons packed with flamingos and llamas grazing!

By bus: There are overnight buses running between La paz and Uyuni. But you will miss the scenery on the way!

Where to stay: Uyuni offers a modest range of hotels. We stayed at the Hotel de Sal Casa Andina. Other options are Hotel de Sal Luna Salada, Hotel Jardines de Uyuni etc..

Tours: Many companies offer tours of the Salar de Uyuni from Uyuni. Or, you can ask at your hotel desk for organized guided tours. We booked a tour on a 4X4 vehicle through our hotel.
