Yogyakarta in 24 hours - A trip to the iconic Borobodur

Located in the central part of the Java island of Indonesia, Borobodur is one of the greatest Buddhist monuments of the world and is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Yogyakarta is well connected by direct flights from Jakarta, Bali and many other Indonesian cities as well as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.


Best time to visit: The dry season is from April to October and is the best season to visit.

There are many hotels across various price ranges in Yogyakarta. We stayed at The Phoenix hotel, Yogyakarta- MGallery collection by Sofitel which is a beautiful heritage hotel.

There are buses for local travel but we suggest you hire a taxi from the airport and use it for the whole day.


Begin the day with a trip to the Sultan's palace in Yogyakarta. It is a small palace and you can see it in about 15-20 mins. Next, head to Prambanan.

Prambanan is a hindu temple complex built in the 10th century and is dedicated to trimurti or the three Gods. It is a UNESCO world heritage site. For more on Prambanan go here. It is more economical to buy the Prambanan-Borobodur combo ticket for 40 USD. The single ticket for Prambanan only is 25 USD. You can buy the tickets at the entry gate.

Spend at least an hour here. See the epic Ramayana sculpted on the temple.

You can also visit the Ratu Boko temple which is 3 km south of Prambanan.

Next, have lunch and head to the iconic Buddhist temple - Borobudur.

Borobudur is the largest Buddhist monument in the world and it was built between 780 AD and 840 AD. This monument is truly majestic and is obviously a UNESCO world heritage site.

Tip: If you can, then try visiting Borobudur at sunrise. There are special tickets for sunrise visit. Entry is from Hotel Manohara. If you are interested in visiting Borobudur at sunrise then you should make your booking for night stay the previous night at Hotel Manohara. This hotel is within the temple complex. The temple is open from 6 am to 5:30 pm.
