St Mary's Basilica, Krakow

One of the best examples of Polish Gothic Cathedral architecture, it was razed to the ground by the Mongols in the 13th century. It was rebuilt in the 14th century, where the Northern Tower was raised to 80 m to serve as watch tower over Krakow.

 

On every hour, a trumpet sound, called the Hejnał mariacki is played from the top of the taller of Saint Mary's two towers. The noon time Hejnal is broadcast on National Radio for all of Poland. The Bugle tune is cut off abruptly. Story goes that this is done on purpose to commemorate the Death of the 13th century trumpeter, who was shot in the throat while sounding the alarm of the Mongols approaching Krakow.
